What is Counselling?

Counselling is a qualified professional’s practise of guiding and assisting people with their personal problems involving emotions and sentiments. This is an act of assisting the client in seeing his or her problem in a new light. This will allow the client to concentrate more on his or her feelings and behaviours in order to make positive changes.

Counselling isn’t about delivering advice or passing judgement. It’s simply assisting the client in viewing the problem from a different perspective depending on their value system. Many people function as counsellors or use counselling skills when giving advice to friends or coworkers at some point in their lives. A professional counsellor, on the other hand, is not the same as someone who employs training skills as part of their job. A professional counsellor employs a variety of counselling techniques with his or her clients.

The role of Counsellor

To begin, the counsellor should refrain from attempting to persuade the client to accept their own beliefs and values. The counsellor’s primary function is to assist the client in exploring various views on their lives and feelings. The counselor avoids becoming emotionally involved with the problem or the client. The counsellor does not pass judgement or offer advice.

The counsellor will help the client to explore aspects of their lives that they previously found impossible to confront. There may be incidents from their upbringing that shed insight on why the client behaves in a certain way in certain situations. This will assist the client in better understanding his or her behaviour so that they can make changes.
